Maramures is a geographical, historical and cultural region in northern Romania and western Ukraine. It is situated on the northeastern Carpathians, along the upper Tisa River, it covers the Maramures Depression and the surrounding Carpathian mountains.
Alternatively, the term Maramures is also used for the Maramures County of Romania, which contains the southern section of the historical region.

Baia Mare is a municipality along the Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County. The city is situated about 600 kilometres (373 miles) from Bucharest, 70 km (43 mi) from the border with Hungary, and 50 km (31 mi) from the border with Ukraine.
Satu Mare is a city with a population of 102,400 (2011) and the capital of Satu Mare County, Romania, as well as the center of the Satu Mare metropolitan area. Mentioned in the Gesta Hungarorum as castrum Zotmar, the city has a history going back to the Middle Ages. Today, it is an academic, cultural, industrial and business centre in northwestern Romania.
